Words have power

It’s often said that words have power. As the year comes to an end there is so much to say, but over the last few days I have had this in my heart. Life at times comes with unique challenges, one of the hardest parts is being talked about. I think we’ve all been there one way or another. People assume, criticize, and even spread rumors without truly knowing. It’s painful, throughout the years I’ve learned that it’s an opportunity to lean on God in ways that deepen our faith and reliance on Him. You learn to rise above it.

It’s no secret that gossip can cause significant damage. Whether it’s assumptions, criticism of our choices, or outright lies, the impact is the same, it hurts. But you learn not to retaliate or stoop to the same level. Instead, trust in God’s promise to fight our battles.

Exodus 14:14 reminds us:

“The Lord will fight for you; you need only to be still.”

Rather than engaging in negativity, choosing to bring it to God, knowing He sees the truth and will defend you in His perfect way and timing. It’s tempting to defend ourselves when others spread gossip, but I’ve learned that silence and prayer speak louder than words.

Romans 12:19 says,

“Do not take revenge, my dear friends, but leave room for God’s wrath, for it is written: ‘It is mine to avenge; I will repay,’ says the Lord.”

By trusting God to handle these situations, we free ourselves from bitterness and can focus on living in a way that honors Him. As hard as it is to be on the receiving end of gossip, it’s equally important to guard our own hearts against doing the same.

Proverbs 16:28 warns,

“A gossip separates close friends.”

God calls us to speak words that build others up, not tear them down. Ephesians 4:29 encourages us:

“Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs.”

As followers of Christ, we’re called to reflect His love, even when it’s difficult.

Yes, words have power, but so does silence. When we let God fight our battles and refuse to engage in negativity, we reflect His love and trust in His sovereignty.

As 2024 comes to a close, this has been on my heart. To all my fellow PKs, ministry families, and everyone in any walk of life, whether you’ve experienced this or not, I want to encourage you: God sees you, God knows you, and He is fighting for you!

As we step into the new year, let’s make it our mission to use our words to heal, uplift, and encourage one another. Together, we can reflect Christ’s love in a world that so desperately needs it.
